The Great Adventure
By Emmet Fox
Many people seem to have the impression that the sole object of metaphysical
study is the overcoming of difficulties; but to suppose that, is to lose all
sense of proportion. The Truth is to be sought for its own sake. The knowledge
of Truth is its own reward, and that reward is health, harmony, and prosperity,
to begin with; but this is only the beginning. The real object of the seeker
should be the development of his own higher faculties and powers; in a word, his
Spiritual Evolution.
Now it so happens that as fast as one acquires spiritual understanding, his
circumstances improve in every respect—his health, his temper, his happiness and
his material surroundings rapidly and automatically change for the better. Per
contra, a want of true understanding automatically and necessarily expresses
itself in some sort of difficulty on the physical plane, culminating in sin,
sickness, and death.
When people find themselves in any difficulty, should they have some glimmerings
of spiritual truth, they realize, however dimly, that a way out is to be found
along the path of spiritual enlightenment, and consequently they study books,
consult friends in the movement, ask for treatment or guidance, or take whatever
step appears to be appropriate at the moment. This is the natural and proper
course to pursue, and, provided they understand what it is that they are doing
it is only a matter of time before their difficulties—their ill-health, their
poverty, their trouble, whatever it is—must disappear. They are, in fact seeking
spiritual enlightenment; they are working for a change in consciousness; and one
cannot seek for an improved consciousness without getting it, nor get it without
making a demonstration.
Misunderstanding and disappointment arise when people mistake the teaching for
some kind of elaborate conjuring trick. When a man supposes that by a wave of
the hand, or the repetition of an incantation, his circumstances can be changed
for the better without any corresponding change in his own mentality, he is
doomed to disappointment. He has not come into Truth, and the Truth movement has
nothing for him.
During the past few years a large number of people of all sorts have consulted
me about their difficulties, and they easily divide themselves into those two
groups. Some people, for instance, are in trouble owing to some very obvious
defect in character, but are quite unwilling to overcome this defect, or even,
in many cases, to acknowledge it; they wish to continue in their mistake and to
have prosperity or happiness as well. Needless to say, for them there is no
relief until they have suffered a little more, and have been punished
sufficiently to make them do what is necessary. The man who drinks, for example,
is certain to ruin his business, and you cannot help him as long as he prefers
whiskey to prosperity. Of course, if he is trying to give up whiskey, you can
help him to do so, and then all will be well, but otherwise he will just have to
go on suffering until his lesson is learned. Other people complain that they
have no friends, cannot keep servants, and that they live unhappy, isolated
lives; and a few minutes conversation makes it obvious that there is an
atrociously bad temper there which has driven everyone away. If such people are
prepared to work to change themselves, the road is clear; but until they are,
there is very little to be done for them.
Most of you who read this, however, will be seeking the Truth in the right way,
and to seek the Truth in that spirit is really to have come into Truth. “You
would not have sought Me had you not already found Me.” That being so, you
should not allow yourself to be worried or depressed merely because the
demonstration is delayed. If you have sufficient understanding to believe in
treatment, you have sufficient understanding to know that it must be only a
matter of time before you are out of the wood—and what does it really matter
whether it is a little sooner or a little later. Any delay in getting results
can only be due to one of two things: Either the mental cause of your difficulty
is very deeply seated in your consciousness and is requiring a good deal of
work; or else you are not yet working in the best way, and if this is so, again
it will be only a matter of time before you find what is the best way for you.
In other words, once you are on the Path there is no hurry. “Oh, but,” says
someone, “in my case there is the most urgent hurry, because unless I make my
demonstration by Saturday the verdict of the Court will be given against me,” or
“my creditors will foreclose,” or “I shall lose the boat,” or what not. But the
answer in Truth is still—there is no hurry, for the gates of hell shall never
prevail. Let evil do its worst on Saturday; let the Court give its verdict; let
the creditors strike their blow; let the boat sail. When Monday comes, prayer
will still put everything right, if you can get your realization, and if not on
Monday, then Wednesday, or Friday, or the week after next. Time does not really
matter, for prayer is creative, and will build the New Jerusalem for you
anywhere, at any time, irrespective of what may have happened, just as soon as
you can get your realization of Truth, Omnipresent Good—Emanuel, which is God
with you. This is the New Jerusalem which comes down out of heaven like a bride
adorned for her husband, and is independent of any conditions on the physical
plane.
When you are in difficulties, look upon the overcoming of them as a great
adventure. Resist the temptation to be tragic, to give way to self-pity or
discouragement; and approach the problems as though you were an explorer seeking
a path through Darkest Africa, or an Edison working to overcome difficulties in
connection with a new invention. You know that there is a way out of any
difficulty whatever, no matter what it may be, through the changing of your own
consciousness by prayer. You know that by thus raising your consciousness any
conceivable form of good that you can desire will be yours; and you know that
nobody else can by any means hinder you from doing this when your really want to
do it—relatives, customers, employers, the government, bad times,
so-called—nothing can hinder you from the rebuilding of your own
consciousness—and this rebuilding is the Great Adventure. Emmet Fox

HEAVEN AND HELL STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS
F. L. Rawson
We make our own comparative heaven and our own hell by the thoughts we
entertain. Most of us have experienced both. As Shakespeare has said: “There is
nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so.” What we have to do is think
rightly. Then the evil will disappear, and indeed must disappear, as it is only
caused by wrong thinking; not always by conscious wrong thinking, but by what is
called the action of thoughts on the subconscious mind
The only power that evil has is the power we allow to it in our so-called minds.
Stop the evil thinking and there is an end of the evil. It is easy to stop evil
thinking with the conscious mind. The only difficulty is to stop in the
subconscious mind. The only way in which this can be done is by actively
thinking of the world of reality, called “God and heaven.” The destruction may
perhaps at first be slow, but it will be more and more rapid as we learn more,
and put our knowledge into practice. No evil can touch us if we keep out the
evil thoughts by right thinking, thinking of God, of absolute good. Then the
so-called mind is improved and “The prince of this world cometh, and hath
nothing in me” John 14:30. Therefore “acquaint now thyself with him and be at
peace” Job 22: 21. Our minds must be constantly dwelling on God, thinking of
good, absolute good, God and the manifestation of God called heaven.
We have as quickly as possible to cease doing things materially and do things by
prayer. The prophet Isaiah said: “Look unto me all ye ends of the earth and be
ye saved, for I am God and there is none else. I, even I, and the Lord; and
beside me there is no savior.” Isaiah 43:11. We have not to take material steps.
Our Lord said: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all
these things shall be added unto you.” Matt. 6:33. He did not say think of God
and then work as hard as you can to bring about what you think will be good. It
is just as likely, in fact more than likely, that it will turn out to be other
than good. If a man can think of God when, for instance, a shell falls near him,
no harm can be done by it. “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be
spiritually minded is life and pace” Rom. 8:6 . Nothing of any kind can harm you
if you are thinking of absolute good. In other words, thinking of the world of
reality, in any shape or form, is as the Bible says, absolute protection against
evil of any kind. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort
me.” (ps. 23:4. Now we are enabled to understand Psalm 91, verses 9 to 11.
“Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High thy
habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh
thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all
thy ways.” The angels referred to are Michael, which is the denial, and Gabriel,
the affirmation. The former gives temporary relief, as the thoughts causing the
trouble disappear when the existence of the trouble in heaven is denied. The
affirmation gives permanent relief as the mind is purified as we realize the
perfection of God and man and God’s perfect world. The rod referred to above is
the denial and the staff is the affirmation. “They comfort me.” As we use the
two-edged sword of Truth, some of the imaginary mist which appears to hide
heaven from us disappears, and we see heaven as it really is; thus we are not so
worried or afraid. This denial and affirmation is called in the first chapter of
Genesis the “lesser light” and the “greater light” and it is also spoken of
throughout the Bible as to “rebuke,” namely, “to cast out of the mouth” and to
“chasten,” by the denial to drive evil thoughts out of the so-called mind, and
by the affirmation to purify the so-called mind. We have constantly to watch our
thoughts and get rid of every wrong thought.
This necessity for thinking of absolute good, called God, is the explanation of
the first amendment: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” Ex. 20:3. We
should always keep our mind “stayed on thee” Is. 26:3 stayed on God. This is the
meaning of the passage: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man
his thoughts: and let him return (in thought) unto the Lord, and he will have
mercy upon him” Is. 55:7. “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all ye ends of the
earth: for I am God, and there is none else” Is. 45:22. Especially should we
never allow ourselves to harm our fellow man by thinking wrongly of him. “Let
none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbor” Zech. 8:17. We
have to think only of God and God’s perfect man. “Henceforth know we no man
after the flesh” Cor 5:16.

Seven Steps in Demonstration - Mildred Mann
There are a number of approaches, or techniques as they are
sometimes called, used in making demonstrations. Various meth-
ods have been tried and proved successful, but the one that will
be most successful for you is the one you can use with the great-
est ease. The following is one of the simplest and most effective:
The first step is to DESIRE. Get a strong enthusiasm for that
which you want in your life, a real longing for something which
is not there now.
The second step is to make a DECISION. Know definitely what
it is that you want, what it is that you want to do or have, and be
willing to pay for it in spiritual values.
The third step is to ASK. Once you are sure of your need, and
you are enthusiastic about it, proceed to ask for it in simple, con-
cise language. Remember, God is not moved by oratory, but by
simplicity and directness.
The fourth step is to BELIEVE. Have faith not only in what you
want, but also in the fact that you will get it. Be consciously, as
well as subconsciously, aware of this. Impress your subconscious
mind with faith, so that there is perfect cooperation between the
subconscious and the conscious,
The fifth step is to WORK AT IT. Spend a few minutes daily in
seeing yourself in the finished picture. Never outline the details,
but rather see yourself enjoying the particular thing. In other
words, do not lead up to it by putting in the building blocks, but
see it complete. If your mind reverts to the negative picture which
now exists, immediately change the film, so to speak, and go
back to the original idea.
The sixth step is to feel GRATITUDE. Always remember to say,
"Thank you, God," and begin to feel the gratitude in your heart.
The most powerful prayer we can ever make is those three words,
provided we really feel it.
The seventh step is to feel EXPECTANCY. Train yourself to
live in a state of happy expectancy. If in the beginning you feel
anything but happy, act it-until it be comes part of you, as it
must and will.
These are the seven steps. Follow them and they wi11 bring
whatever it is that you need.

Thinking Along With Emmet Fox
One of the most important symbols, which runs all through the
Bible from Genesis to Revelation, is the symbol represented by
Woman. The Bible is full of women, good women and the other
kind; pleasant women and rather unpleasant ones; wise women and
foolish women; rich women and poor women; simple women and
learned women; all kinds of women.
Woman is a continuing symbol throughout the Bible for this
reason : Woman stands for the human soul. From a metaphysical
point of view the Woman is not just Eve, or Mary, or Jezebel, or any
particular person. Woman signifies the human soul-your soul-or
as psychology expresses it, the psyche or mind. That is represented
by Woman, and the history of Woman in the Bible is the history of
your soul, and one of the keys to your destiny.
The soul is not the divine part of you. This divine part is the "I
AM," "pneuma," which we will consider later. Your soul expresses
itself as your personality, and that includes everything in the con-
scious and subconscious mind. So it is the changing personality, the
psyche, which is represented by Woman in the Bible.
The whole of history is really the story of the human soul, always
changing, either getting better or getting worse. It is a receptive
thing-this constant change in your thought-as you either allow
the spiritual power, the "I AM," to govern, or you let the lower self
have sway. So, WOMAN IS THE SOUL.
Women Are The Light of the World! Happy Mother's Day.
